Samsung Omnia and Sony Ericsson Xperia X1 perfect for Smart’s Network?

A couple of days back, I was reading this news article about the upcoming availability of the Blackberry Bold 9000 from Smart and Globe. Smart has also announced that their new HSDPA mobile network will be able to provide up to 7 Mbps of bandwidth speed for HSDPA enabled phones.

Since I am shopping for a new mobile phone, I decided to look into the features and specs of the Blackberry Bold 9000. The specifications are actually what you’d expect in a business-centric mobile phone but I was just wondering how on earth can it be perfect for Smart’s new HSPDA network when the Blackberry Bold only supports up to 3.6 Mbps?

So I went and check out some other mobile phones that can theoretically use the 7 Mbps network speed (I say theoritically because, the actual speed depends on a lot of factors).

Smart Uzzap – more than just a Yahoo IM gateway

uzzap-0148I’ve finally gotten Uzzap to work. It turned out that my registration to Smart Uzzap failed and wasn’t saved to the Smart Uzzap server. I’ve re-registered and finally gotten to login.

The first thing that I noticed upon logging into the Uzzap service was that it was more responsive than the Globe Unlichat service. One reason may because I’m using Uzzap via a wifi connection (you can only use a mobile phone network with Globe’s Unlichat).

Is there a GPS service in the Philippines?

I’m not aware of a GPS service in the Philippines but a friend has been asking how he could use his Mio GPS device here in the Philippines so I thought I’d post it here and see if anyone reading this might know if a GPS service exists in the Philippines.

I know there are some form of location-based services from the Telcos like Smart and Globe Telecom but these are cell site based services and don’t use GPS.

2 Billion SMS messages a day in the Philippines

If you’ve listen to the news lately about the current move of the Senate to “solicit” 10% of the Telcos’ earnings from text messages, you’d probably notice that the current estimate for SMS messages in the Philippines is about 2 billion SMS messages daily (that’s daily!).

Trying out Globe’s Unlichat (no luck with Smart Uzzap)

ym-unlichatThis post should have been “A look into the Smart’s Uzzap and Globe’s Unlichat” but after several attempts at getting Smart’s Uzzap application installed on my mobile phone I’ve just given up on using it. I’ve gotten to the point that after several attempts I was able to install the software but I just couldn’t login in. I hope you had better luck than I did. It would have been nice to see how they paired up on their Instant Messaging services.

Downloading of the Globe Unlichat application happened with actually no frills. I went to the unlichat web page, typed my mobile phone number. Globe sent me a link for the application download and I got the application installed on my mobile phone in no time. The application doesn’t seem to work over wifi if you have a wifi-equipped mobile phone. You’ll have to use the Globe network to use it.
