Samsung Galaxy 5 Android phone in the Philippines

Samsung has been nothing less than aggresive with churning out Android based mobile phones. When the Samsung Spica, one of it’s first Android mobile phones, became available in the Philippines I decided to buy one. Well it looks like Samsung is not stopping anytime soon. Adding to it’s list of Android phones that’s available on the Philippine shores is the Samsung Galaxy 5 cellphone. The Samsung Galaxy 5 is also know as the Samsung Corby i5500 and it looks like it’s the first Android phone under the Corby brand.

Samsung Galaxy S Android phone to get version 2.2

The Samsung Galaxy S which is currently available from Globe Telecoms might soon be getting a welcome update to Android version 2.2 also known as the Froyo version if the global update includes the Philippines. There are several enhancements to the Froyo version of Android but speed is probably the most welcome. Android Froyo offers 2-5 times improvement in the speed of mobile apps. Continue reading …

Samsung Spica upgraded to Android 2.1

It’s been almost a month now since I’ve bought my Samsung Spica aka GT-I5700 from a Samsung Mobile store in the Philippines. Since then, I’ve read that one of the local mobile network provider, Globe Telecom, has offered the Samsung Spica for free at Plan 1800. If you prefer an openline or network unlocked Samsung Spica, you can go to mobile shops and buy one for as low as Php 13,800. If you are planning to flash the firmware, then you’d be better off with a network unlocked mobile phone.

Ovi Maps with Navigation simply works

I’m starting off my comparision of the Symbian based Nokia 5800 XpressMusic with the Android based Samsung Spica on this post. Both phones are in the same price point and has the basic features of the new breed of smartphones – touchscreens and GPS.

Last Friday was a Philippine holiday, the Ilagan family has decided to spend the holiday weekend at the Matabungkay beach in Batangas. I have recently decided to spend more time using a mobile phone for other things beside voice communication and text messages. On the trip, I’ve decided to compare getting directions using the free Ovi Maps with Navigation and Google Maps with direction.

Bought an Android powered Samsung Spica

I’ve finally decided on buying a mobile phone based on the Android open mobile platform. There are currently two mobile phone manufacturers that offer Android based mobile phone in the Philippines (Samsung and HTC). I bought the Samsung GT-I5700 aka Galaxy Spica from a local cellphone store. Besides the big price difference (more than twice) between the Samsung Spica and the HTC Hero, the Samsung Spica uses a much faster 800Mhz CPU.

Samsung store for Symbian and Windows Mobile software now live

Samsung Mobile has just launched it’s very own store front of Symbian or Windows Mobile software for Samsung cell phones. If you’re a proud owner of a Samsung mobile phone you can now easily find a mobile application for your cell phone with ease. The Samsung Mobile shop also offers downloads of freely available software for different Samsung cell phone models.

The Samsung store will not only benefit the end users. The opening of the Samsung store is also beneficial to mobile software developers creating software for Samsung cell phones.
