Nokia still the most connected phone in the Philippines

Over the past couple of weeks I’ve been looking at statistics about mobile browsing in the Philippines. I wanted to find out what mobile phones I would need to support on the new version of the Ortigas Online web site when it comes out on the second quarter of this year. One of the things that I found out is that Nokia is still the dominant mobile phone brand in the Philippines according to a recent article by admob.com on advertising statistics.

Come and join the Photoshop contest

If you’re one cool dude who has a knack in using image editing tools like Adobe’s Photoshop (I know some pretty gifted people in the Philippines). Maybe you should take a shot at joining the contest over at Gizmodo. I just love the Photoshop contest at Gizmodo. Shows a lot of people have real talent. It’s also fun browsing at the contest entries.

This time, the topic is about creating a image showing an iPhone software application that Apple will never ever approve. Here’s one example:

An elegant solution to iPhone’s sound volume

If you’re one of those Apple iPhone users that doesn’t seem to get enough decibels from your mobile phone, here’s a very elegant solution. It won’t even cost you an arm and a leg to get one.

An smart company called Ten One Design has created the equivalent of having to put your hand over the iPhone speaker just to redirect and concentrate the sound coming out from it. A tuned conical deflection chamber designed to make the audio from your iPhone clearer and also slightly louder. Sound waves are reflected toward you, instead of away, so you feel more involved in your game, movie, or music.

SoundClip is said to amplify the iPhone audio by 10dB between 6kH and 20kHz, resulting in a cleaner, more accurate response. Storaging the SoundClip is easily done by a cord-gripping feature that fastens the object to your charge cable during syncing and charging.

N97: At last Nokia comes out with the iPhone killer

With the mixed opinions on how well the T-mobile G1 Android based mobile phone performed against the Apple iPhone, it looks like Nokia is sending a loud message — “Watch and learn boys!”

I really love the idea of having an open mobile platform such as Android because of the freedom and possibilities it gives to mobile phone owners but I guess I will have to wait a while before the mobile platform will mature. Apple with its exquisite engineering prowess has always led the world in creating great engineering worksmanships like the iPod, Macbook and the iPhone.

Linux (Android next?) on the iPhone

I guess it will only be a matter of time before we get a full blow Linux (and probably Android) distro for the Apple iPhone. The iPhone-dev people have announced the successul porting of Linux of on the Apple iPhone.

Although this is a basic kernel port with a shell compiled from the Busybox package. This paves the way for a very good future to porting a whole bunch of distros to the iPhone including the new Android open mobile platform.

VirtualBox 2.0.6 released, fixes Nokia / iPhone sync via USB

The VirtualBox team has released version 2.0.6 of its VirtualBox virtualization software. I thought is was going to be something that adds support for Ubuntu Jaunty Jackalope but guess what, it’s something better!

For those of you who are using Ubuntu as the host OS and have installed VirtualBox to be able to use Nokia’s PC Suite, the changelog says “USB: Fixed support for iPhone and Nokia devices (Linux host: bugs #470 & #491)”. This is good news since a lot of Ubuntu users seem to be particularly interested in running the Nokia PC Suite under a VirtualBox guest machine running Windows.

Apple doing away with Developer NDA

This should be really welcome news to all the iPhone developers out there and provides some hope that Apple will be more open to getting J2ME and Flash into the iPhone. It seems that Apple has decided that it will do away with the current non-disclosure agreement it has with iPhone developers and publishers

iPhone, Tube, G1, KP500 – touch screen phones are in

It looks like we’re entering in a new level in the technology of mobile phones — touch screen equipped cell phones. Touch screens are not some new technology. They’ve been around for quite a while. What’s new about them is the way we are beginning to use them — without styluses and just using our fingers to interact with the touch screen.

With the Apple iPhone 3G’s launch in the Philippines. The recent release of the Android open mobile platform enabled T-mobile G1 cell phone, the soon to be released Nokia 5800 (better known as the Nokia Tube) and now the just announced LG KP500 from LG Electronics.

Get an openline / unlocked iPhone from Apple

You read it right! Now you can get an unadulterated, pristine openline / unlocked iPhone directly from Apple. The web page even says “iPhone 3G purchased at the Apple Online Store can be activated with any wireless carrier. Simply insert the SIM from your current phone into iPhone 3G and connect to iTunes 8 to complete activation.” Don’t believe me? I did a screen capture of the web page:
