Syncing a Nokia mobile phone with Mac OS X

I use a Nokia 5800 ExpressMusic mobile phone and there’s no PC Suite on Mac OS X. But unlike Ubuntu Nokia actually created ways to sync their Symbian based mobile phones with Mac OS X data. I found that after a couple of software installs, I can sync my mobile phone contacts, calendar, music, photos, bookmarks and videos to my Mac notebook.

Before writing more about how it can be done, you need to know a couple of things. Of course not all Nokia mobile phones are currently supported. You’ll have to check if your Nokia mobile phone will work with Mac OS X. If you have a new Nokia mobile phone, chances are it’s supported. As of this writing, the solution only works for Mac OS X Leopard (and Tiger) users. Mac OS X Snow Leopard users will have to wait for Nokia to release software for it.

Now to move on. The first thing I configured for syncing was my Nokia mobile phone contacts and calendar. I was able to sync the Nokia Contacts with the Mac OS X Address Book. And my Nokia calendar with the Mac OS X iCal. I’ve written a post (Sync Nokia contacts/calendar on Mac OS X using iSync) on how it can be done on my Connected Phone web site.

The next items I was able to sync on my Nokia phone with Mac OS X was my music (with iTunes), photos (with iPhoto), bookmarks (with Safari). I actually use Firefox so bookmark syncing wasn’t that useful for me. So far I’m quite happy with my new Mac OS X environment. I’ve adapted to it quite easily and fast since I’m a Unix (Linux/Ubuntu) user. One thing I’m beginning to love about Mac OS X is that things simply just work together. Even syncing my Nokia 5800 was simple. I don’t even have to use the Nokia PC Suite or OVI Suite.
