List of supported cell phones in new mobile broadband feature of Ubuntu

Since the last time I tried out how to setup a 3G connection on Ubuntu Intrepid, I’ve been trying out other cell phones that works with the new feature in Intrepid to allow users to easily connect via their mobile phones.

So far I’ve tried the following GPRS/3G/HSDPA mobile phones and they work under Ubuntu Intrepid.

Current list of supported cell phones in Ubuntu Intrepid’s mobile broadband automatic connection feature:

  • Motorola RAZR (3G/HSPDA works with Network Manager using a cable)
  • Sony Ericsson 810i (3G works with Network Manager using a cable)
  • Nokia N80ie (3G works with Network Manager using a cable)
  • Nokia N95 ( will try out this week 3G/HSDPA works with Network Manager using a cable)

If you have made your mobile phone to work on Ubuntu Intrepid, please leave a comment so I can try and make a list of supported handsets. Thanks.

  1. I’ve only done this in Jaunty, but it should be the same in Intrepid. For a T-Mobile G1, first “sudo /etc/init.d/NetworkManager stop” because NM is broken (since Hardy, at least) and can’t handle Ad-Hoc networks. Then switch to Ad-Hoc mode “sudo iwconfig wlan0 mode Ad-Hoc” and connect to the phone’s network with the usual iwconfig & dhclient routine.

I can effortlessly use Nokia E71 for 3G/HSDPA/EDGE/GPRS on Ubuntu 8.10. Fedora 9/10

  3. My LG CU515 Plum is flawless and simple with knetworkmanager under kubuntu 8.10. Plug the phone in, and it shows up in knetworkmanager. Configure, save, and connect. Took me 30 seconds. Kubuntu is ready for prime-time.

  4. Works flawless with my K750i. That’s 14.4 modem speeds, though…

Hi there. My motorola razr v3 works fine but slow using a 64k sim. Don’t think it is 3g capable. But I can’t get karmic to see my Sagem 404x. I am hoping it will be a bit quicker.
    Any ideas
    Thanks for the info.

I am using my Sony Ericsson W700i in Ubuntu 8.10 (Interpid Ibex) using the networkmanager applet 0.7.0 for connecting gprs that is Airtel’s Mobile Office but to my mis-fortune it does not work kubuntu 9.04. When I connect the w700i phone the PC hangs. What about the Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid Lynx. Can any one tell me about it?

On Ubuntu 9.10 and 10.04, I can say the Nokia 3110 Classic works using Network Manager right outta da box…

And LG U890, LG U990 and Motorola Rizr Z8 (aka Motorizr Z8) do not even show up in Network Manager. Even though I have read others with the LG U890/U990 having success…can’t remember if they were using 9.10 or 10.04 though, I know a couple had older, like Intrepid or Gutsy.

For me, its been most do not, and one does!
