Upgraded to VirtualBox 2.0.2 on Ubuntu

I’ve just finished upgrading from VirtualBox 1.6.4 to VirtualBox 2.0.2 and I must say that the VirtualBox team has really done a great job in version 2.0.2. I still haven’t tried new support of VirtualBox for 64 bit guest machines because I am using the 32-bit version of Ubuntu.

One of the more obvious improvements that I readily found is in the seamless mode. Seamless mode in Virtualbox allows you to integrate you guest machine’s desktop into the host machines desktop. When I was using version 1.6.4, seamless mode was not too useful since my Windows guest machine would simply hang up.

But in Virtualbox 2.0.2, seamless mode for my Windows guest machine was works using a single monitor. When using a dual head configuration, I have no problems switching to seamless mode on the main monitor but the guest machine would just disappear when I tried to display it on the secondary monitor.

I tried connecting my Nokia mobile phone using a USB cable but still no luck making it work with the Nokia PC Suite. Bluetooth connection to PC Suite still works though so I guess I will still have to use bluetooth to connect my Nokia mobile phone to the PC Suite.

Also, saving to a shared Ubuntu directory in a Windows XP SP3 guest machine is now working. I was having problems saving files inside an application like Blogdesk previously but now saving files seem to be working already.

On aesthetics, the Virtualbox GUI is better on 2.0.2. The icons are better looking than the previous version and the menus look cleaner and smooth.

Also noticed that the speed looks a bit faster for the new Virtualbox version.

Overall, I’m happy that my Virtualbox upgrade to version 2.0.2 went smoothly.

Update: This morning, when I fired up my notebook, the wifi on my Compaq Presario C700 wasn’t working. After a bit of tinkering, I suddenly realized that the vboxdrv setup might have done something to the driver symbol tables. So I did a fresh make and make install on the madwifi drivers and everything was working again.
